Join this celebration put on by Master Recycler Cecelia Warner (Class 47). It takes place at the Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival on Saturday, September 16th from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm, with following events on September 23rd and 30th.

Partner Highlight - City of Gresham
Meet the team at the City of Gresham!
Meghan Borato is the community outreach and education specialist and the primary contact for master recyclers in Gresham. She works on residentially focused waste prevention, reuse, recycling, and toxics reduction programs, including Eat Smart, Waste Less, and Gresham Repair Cafes. Meghan is passionate about creative reuse, sewing, design, and youth education. Nick Isbister is the City’s Multifamily Recycling Coordinator. He is your point of contact for all things Multifamily in the City. He is also your contact for Gresham’s bi-annual recycling collection events (previously the yearly ‘Earth Day’ event). He can be reached at Nick.Isbister@greshamoregon.gov or at (503) 618-2528.
Gregg Hayward has worked with the Gresham business community for many years, delivering waste reduction outreach assistance to businesses and assisting them in pursuing Gresham Green Business certification. In Gresham, there has been interest in recycling presentations to staff at some companies, but many are interested in quick and easy reminders of what goes in each bin. We would love to hear from master recyclers about leads to businesses interested in improving recycling, composting or other aspects of waste reduction onsite or companies interested in pursuing Gresham Green Business certification. Susie Houlden is the Business Food Waste Outreach Specialist mainly for the City of Gresham, but she also assists in Fairview, Troutdale and Wood Village. She works with businesses to help them start and maintain food scrap collection programs. Jennifer Ilminen is our administrative assistant at the City of Gresham. She is your first point of contact when calling the department and takes care of all things administrative like invoicing, contracting, tracking and overall customer support. She also manages our Clear Stream recycling receptacle checkout program as well as our bulky waste pilot program. Born and raised in Oregon, Jennifer has lived much of her life in Gresham and the surrounding areas and enjoys working with the community and meeting new people. Johnny Dea serves the City of Gresham as the Sustainability & Climate Action Technician, focusing on developing the City's first Climate Action Plan. Johnny works across departments to gain a wide range of input of climate strategies and manage projects. When not specifically focusing on climate action, Johnny provides support to Gresham's Green Business program, commercial recycling, and sustainability outreach.

Congratulations to Mario who is now a Master Recycler centurion, reporting over 178 hours! Like many Master Recyclers, he says the number is likely much higher. Mario was in one of the online courses that took place over COVID, but that didn’t stop him from finding opportunities to get out there and talk about recycling in his community. He has taken a one-on-one approach, reaching out to neighbors, friends, and businesses. Going above and beyond, he’s even helped share his knowledge of waste reduction with children in Nigeria, partnering with family to create job trainings. Well done, Mario!

Anna Kurnizki (Class 84) has reached 30 hours and has officially certified as a Master Recycler! Anna spent much of her volunteer hours working on initiatives around reuse and repair, which makes sense as she is also the Executive Director at Community Warehouse. You may have seen her at the St. Andrews Bulky Waste Event, the Parkrose Fix it Fair, or at Sunday Parkways. Many thanks, Anna, and congratulations!

Sarah Korn (Class 84) has also officially certified as a Master Recycler. Sarah’s focus has been on repair and recovery. She’s attended the March Portland Fix-It Fair, the April James Recycling event, and also participated in several Vernier Green team meetings and fairs.
