Position Summary
Metro recycles most of the hazardous waste it collects and disposes of the rest. We're hiring part-time temporary workers to help with this collection and disposal process.

Under the direction of the Hazardous Waste Facility Supervisor, this position participates in the handling of incoming hazardous waste loads at Metro's hazardous waste collections and Hazardous Waste Facilities, including receiving, identifying, sorting and preparation for disposal of hazardous wastes from households and small businesses.

This is a part-time temporary position with variable work hours, not to exceed 1040 hours in a 12 month period. Work locations include various locations off-site at hazardous waste clean-up events, Metro Central Station (6161 NW 61st Ave., Portland) and Metro South Station (2001 Washington St., Oregon City).

Essential Job Duties

  • Assists in receiving, identifying, sorting, and preparation for disposal of incoming household and small business hazardous waste.

  • Assists in setting up and operating off-site hazardous waste collection events.

  • Assists in the cleanup of hazardous waste materials spills.

  • Prepares inventory counts, report forms and transport manifests.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience which would provide the candidate with the desired knowledge, skill and ability required to perform the job. Specialized training or experience in a field related to hazardous waste management is preferred, but not required. Requires the ability to work weekends.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, haulers, other Metro staff and the public

  • Ability to learn and put into practice the fundamentals of waste handling and disposal requirements

  • Ability to learn and follow instruction regarding EPA, DEQ and other regulations pertaining to hazardous waste

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing

  • Ability to provide quality customer service

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions

Working conditions: Temporary hazardous waste technicians are often required to perform the elements of this position while encumbered by protective equipment or clothing. This is a highly physical position and may require frequent or continuous standing, stooping, bending, twisting, walking, talking, sitting, fingering, grasping, handling and good general hearing. May also require occasional reaching, feeling, repetitive motions of the hands/wrists, kneeling, climbing, and the ability to lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds and push and/or pull up to 1000 pounds.
