Local Master Recycler Joins the National Repair Movement
This month we’ve asked Master Recycler Mentor, Colleen Johnston (Class 36), to share her experience attending a national summit on the Repair Fairs.

CENTURIONS
This month, a record of five people reported their 100th hour. This puts them into the very special status as Centurion Master Recycler. To recognize their efforts, they will receive a 100 button to wear next to their badge. It is made of reused bottle caps.
Este mes, un récord de cinco personas reportaron su centésima hora. Esto los coloca en estado muy especial como Experto en Reciclaje “Centurión”. Para reconocer sus esfuerzos, recibirán un botón “100” para usar junto a su placa. Es hecho de tapas de botellas reutilizadas.
Amy Van Schijndel (Class 74) has reported more than 1000 hours!! Amy was the first person from her to class to become a Certified Master Recycler -just weeks after the course ended. Amy jumped on the posts in the volunteer calendar to staff a recycling booth at the Humane Society staff fair and Cedar Hills Sustainability Fair. But she also reached out in her own community, organizing a sustainable Halloween Party and writing a series of articles in her active LinkedIn account. The intense times of 2020 inspired Amy to "become a full-time activist". Determined to address the issues of consumption and climate change she volunteered at least 40 hours most weeks for 350 Washington County and Green Peace.

Liz Start (Class 56) is such an amazing asset in our community. She has the on-the-ground experience of formally working for a garbage and recycling company. She celebrates creative reuse through her own artist talents, and as the Executive Director of SCRAP PDX for many years. She's been an active member of the Association of Oregon Recyclers. One might think it would be hard to find 100 volunteer hours on top of all that work in the field. But she is serious about sustainability and equity. Liz has dedicated much of her Master Recycler hours growing sustainability in her own Milwaukie community. She helped organize a sustainability tour there. She also staffed the Milwaukie Farmer's Market recycling booth. Liz has dedicated much of her time focused on building a more equitable and inclusive Solid Waste and Recycling community in our region. She has played a leadership role in this area for AOR and she was at the founding meeting of Master Recyclers of Color where she continues to play a key role.

Richard Eyde (Class 66) has been leading up his green team in his HOA and joined the Beaverton Climate Challenge. But it is safe to say that he is a happy Master Recycler when he is in the buzz of events (especially in Beaverton). He is a fixer for the Repair Fairs, helped with a compost give away in Beaverton, joined PlanetCon collection events. He even organized a COVID safe collection for his HOA.
Richard Eyde (Clase 66) ha estad liderando su equipo ecológico en la asociación de propietarios de viviendas y se afilió al grupo Desafío de Clima de Beaverton. Pero es seguro decir que es un Experto en Reciclaje feliz cuando está en medio de un evento comunitario (Especialmente cuando está en Beaverton). Es reparador en las Ferias de Reparación, ayudó con un evento de abono en Beaverton y participó con PlanetCon en los eventos de recolección de reciclaje. Incluso organizó una recolección segura de COVID para su asociación de propietarios de viviendas.
Gabriel Segura Santillán (Class 73) attended the Centro Cultural/Washington County class. Afterward, he taught people how to use non-toxic cleaners and the importance of recycling at various Latino events. Gabriel also visited apartments with the County to distribute recycling bags and answer questions. It is obvious from the pictures that Gabriel made authentic connections with people in the community. His work did not stop in 2020. He just had to start doing his presentations with Facebook Live. Gabriel Segura Santillán (Clase 73) asistió la clase por el Condado de Washington y el Centro Cultural. Después, enseñó a la gente, como hacer limpieza sin tóxicos y la importancia de reciclar a muchos eventos Latinos. Gabriel también visitó apartamentos con el Condado para distribuir bolsas de reciclaje y contestar preguntas sobre el reciclaje. Es obvio por las fotos que Gabriel hace conexiones auténticas con la comunidad. Su trabajo en la comunidad no terminó en 2020. Solamente era necesario hacer sus presentaciones por Facebook Live. Milka Méndez (Class 73) also participated in the first all-Spanish language Master Recycler class last year with Centro Cultural. In the summer of 2019, Milka spent much of her hours sharing tips on recycling and food preservation at the Hillsboro and Forest Grove Farmers' Markets. Milka continues to engage family and friends on sustainable living. But she is also active with several virtual efforts through the Environmental Promoters of Washington County. She is active with PÁSALO! a Facebook group that promotes reuse by providing a place for people to post pictures of items they are ready to discard for others to claim. Milka also offered a webinar on how to clean and disinfect your home without toxic chemicals.
Milka Méndez (Clase 73) también participó en la primera clase de los Expertos en Reciclaje dictada por el Centro Cultural tan solo en español. En el verano del 2019, Milka pasó su tiempo en los mercados de Hillsboro y Forrest Grove compartiendo consejos sobre reciclaje y conservación de alimentos. Milka continúa involucrado con familiares y amigos en promover una vida sostenible. Pero también participa activamente en varios esfuerzos virtuales a través de los Promotores Ambientales del Condado de Washington. Ella es activa en ¡PÁSALO! un grupo de Facebook que promueve la reutilización al proporcionar un lugar para que las personas publiquen imágenes de los artículos que están listos para descartar así otros pueden reclamarlos.
