The Position

The City of Portland is seeking a Community Outreach and Information Assistant in the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT). The Portland Bureau of Transportation is a community partner in shaping a livable city. We plan, build, manage and maintain an effective and safe transportation system that provides people and businesses access and mobility. We keep Portland moving. The Community Engagement and Public Outreach Assistant is one of the bureau's primary liaisons with members of the public who are seeking information about or have concerns about PBOT policies, programs and services. The person in this position will be responsible for fulfilling public records requests. The Community Engagement and Public Outreach Assistant will be expected to organize community and neighborhood meetings to inform stakeholders about PBOT initiatives. The person in this position will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, the ability to build community relations, be comfortable with public speaking and have the ability to gather information across a range of sources and deploy this information to solve complex problems. This position will also need to be familiar with community engagement and outreach strategies and common survey and research practices.

To Qualify

 

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

  1. Knowledge and experience applying public information, advertising, marketing and public involvement practices and trends in a culturally competent manner to engage diverse stakeholders.

  2. Experience and ability to write clear and compelling public materials and to do so under tight deadlines.  

  3. Ability and experience working with members of the public to provide information and/or address concerns regarding programs and services.

  4. Ability and experience working with political aides, public agency personnel, and community representatives to find and provide solutions, information, and exercise sound judgment within established guidelines.

  5. Knowledge and experience applying advertising and marketing including assisting in organizing and conducting public events such as open houses, town halls and information sessions.

  6. Ability and experience maintaining accurate files and records using databases.
