We’re here to help!
The Master Recycler Program is administered by Metro in partnership with the Cities of Beaverton, Gresham and Portland, and Clackamas and Washington Counties. The Master Recycler Program also partners on classes with specific community-based organizations. Currently, that includes Centro Cultural and North by Northeast Community Health Center.
Metro
Stacy Ludington (she/her)
Master Recycler Class 61, Program Manager
One of my greatest joys is building community and empowering others through knowledge, connection, and fun. I became a Master Recycler while serving as a Confluence AmeriCorps member at Portland Public Schools. For seven years after that, I helped Master Recyclers reach their volunteer hours as a Sustainability Analyst at Clackamas County. Master Recycler volunteers are the best and your passion and dedication to helping our world become a better place warms my heart each and every day! Thank you for all you do and I am honored to serve you all.
Hans Kumler (he/him)
Master Recycler Class 95, Program assistant
My name is Hans Kumler (pronounced Coom-lur) and I’m the program assistant for Metro’s Waste Prevention and Environmental Services Community Services & Education team (WPES-CSE). Part of my job is to support Stacy and the Master Recycler Program by handling many of the administrative needs that help keep things running smoothly. From maintaining our database of Master Recyclers to assembling class handbooks, I’m on it – just in the background!
Beaverton
Nic Knoll (he/him)
I’m Nicholas Knoll and work as an Outreach Specialist for the City of Beaverton’s Office of Sustainability and Recycling.
I love working in the city I call home and primarily focus on our multifamily (5+ unit) programming, public outreach events and expanding waste prevention via reuse and repair initiatives.
All of the aforementioned work is improved by your infectious passion, inspiring your neighbors to become more involved themselves and I feel fortunate to have you as partners.
Your time and expertise are invaluable to Beaverton and the Metro region accomplishing our commitments to our communities and I hope to play a role in you finding meaning and impact as a Master Recycler.
Never hesitate to contact me and thank you for all that you do.
Clackamas
Colleen Johnston (she/her)
Master Recycler Class 36
Colleen has been married to her husband, Craig, a teacher, for thirty years. They have three children. When not working at Clackamas County, Colleen spends the other part of her day with her youngest son who is autistic. She enjoys volunteering as a Master Recycler especially at the Milwaukie Farmer’s Market, loves to garden, go for walks and is a news junkie so you can often finding her reading something on current events. She has volunteered as a Master Recycler for about 20 years. She loves helping new Master Recyclers find their comfort spot volunteering and encourage experienced Master Recyclers to stay up to date and keep volunteering and growing. She likes working with Master Recyclers because they are creative, curious and always wanting to encourage the community to help our shared environment in so many different topics.
Gresham
Paige DeBose (they/them)
Master Recycler Class 95
Master Recyclers are able to connect with the public as peers, as neighbors. This element really makes the Master Recycler program successful because they can do this work with or without us environmental “professionals.” I am so thankful this program exists so that none of us are alone in our mutual quest to educate others about protecting the environment and our health. Plus, it’s always fun to geek out about recycling together!
Portland
Genevieve Joplin (she/her)
Master Recycler Class 31
Genevieve has been part of the Outreach and Engagement team at the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability for 20 years, spanning a variety of experience in event planning and outreach campaigns. She has advised businesses on workplace sustainability efforts, facilitated trainings and coordinated opportunities to network and collaborate. She is incredibly proud to be working with local government colleagues, community partner organizations and the Master Recycler program, to provide the Portland community with waste prevention and recycling information.
Genevieve was born and raised in Washington, DC and has lived in Oregon since 1995. She loves the Pacific Northwest, traveling both around Oregon and our great National Parks system.
Genevieve values uplifting community, sharing innovative ideas, and of course supporting the Master Recycler Program! Please reach out and share your great ideas-- unique Master Recycler project ideas are something she’s always interested in hearing about! She is also a Master Recycler (Class 31) and a North Clackamas Eco School Network Steering Committee member.

Sergio Garcia Cruz (he/him/el)
Master Recycler Class 73
I've been a Recycling Expert since 2019. I was part of the first class in Spanish (class of 73).
Since 2020, I've coordinated the Washington County Environmental Promoters (PAs) Group. The course changed my way of thinking: it's no longer just about littering, but about understanding the environmental impact.
Our group is dedicated to informing, educating, and raising awareness, in addition to strengthening our culture and traditions, and reaching out to new generations!
We carry out activities such as information tables, talks, and classes on various topics related to environmental sustainability.
I love answering community questions and am always learning from everyone.
