The City of Portland’s Multifamily Recycling program has a request for a Master Recycler volunteer (two would be great) to provide an educational presentation at Silvercrest Residence. This is a low-income affordable housing community for seniors over 62 located close-in NE Portland. Silvercrest is operated by The Salvation Army who also provide supportive services to residents. Management is very engaged with the community, and committed to sustainable practices – we’ve offered several recycling refreshers and collection events over the years, which are always well attended.
What: Recycling Refresher for approximately 30-40 residents
When: Tuesday December 8 OR Wednesday December 9 around 2/2.30 PM
The manager is specifically interested in decreasing recyclables ending up in the garbage, and welcomes information about junk mail, disposing of medical waste (needles, expired meds), and collecting old electronics, batteries, and lightbulbs. There could be an opportunity to work with this community to coordinate a collection event next spring, if interested. This is a great opportunity if you enjoy working with engaged residents, problem solving and relationship building. Contact me if you’re interested, and I’ll connect you with the manager. Plan to meet briefly with me at BPS prior to the refresher to pick up the kit, and review the request; you’ll also need to do a site audit of the collection area to familiarize yourself with the current set-up before the presentation.
