Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Your Plastics!

Bring those hard to recycle plastics, Master Recyclers will collect it, and Agri-Plas Inc., a recycler located in Brooks, Oregon, will recycle the plastic into new products.  Master Recyclers sponsored eight similar plastic roundup events and reused and recycled over 90 tons of plastic with the help of almost 8,800 community residents who participated.

There are many places to recycle plastics year round: to find a location near you contact Metro at (503)234-3000 or use Metro’s Find a Recycler site.

Here's other ways you can help:

Reduce your use of plastics:
  • Buy durable goods instead of flimsy plastics that have to be replaced.
  • Select products with little or no packaging.
  • Ask manufacturers to use less packaging.
  • Buy items in bulk.

Reuse:

  • Shop with your own reusable bags at the grocery store. Even in the bulk department!
  •  Use a reusable water bottle.
  • Hand down toys when your kids outgrow them.
  • Donate to charity

Recycle:

  • Plastics with can be recycled at home in your curbside program.
  • You can now also recycle margarine-type tubs, flower pots and hand buckets at the curb in the entire Portland Metro area.

What do they do with all that plastic collected at the Master Recycler Roundups, anyway?

Agri-plas, a Brooks company, specializes in preparing plastics used at farms, greenhouses and plant nurseries for recycling.  Their innovative approach to developing new ways to clean and prepare plastics and identifying new markets in plastics (mostly in the United States) has made it possible to recycle those hard-to-recycle plastics.

Agri-plas makes chips or pellets out of the materials and then sells them to other manufacturers who make a multitude of items. Plastic Pots are mostly made back into plastic pots. Plastic bags mostly become plastic lumber. Markets come and go for various other resins of plastics. If Agri-plas doesn't have a specific market for materials they are combined as miscellaneous plastic. The miscellaneous plastics often get chipped together and mixed with recycled wood powder to become railroad ties, replacing rotting wood ties that require toxic chemicals to maintain. Railroad companies have to replace 1000's of wood ties every year.  They have yet to have to replace the plastic ones.

Agri-plas is known for their exceptionally well sorted and contaminant-free plastic, making it easier for manufacturers to use.
