The Position

The Business Composting & Recycling Specialist position (Classification Title: Support Specialist 2) will provide technical assistance, resources and education to Beaverton businesses about commercial composting, recycling, and waste prevention. The position requires the ability to discuss a broad range of waste prevention, composting, recycling and sustainability topics in a professional and courteous manner – with a primary emphasis on promoting and expanding the commercial composting program.

The position is a full-time, primarily during standard office hours, with occasional evening and weekend event work. Up to two-thirds of work time is spent in the field working with businesses with the remaining time in the office.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Provide outreach, education and technical assistance about Recycle at Work and Compost at Work programs to businesses in person and by phone.

  • Thoroughly track, detail and report on interactions and outcomes.

  • Create a positive experience for internal and external customers through professional and courteous behavior and creative problem resolution.

  • Participate in program planning (operational, procedural and implementation) including research, compiling information, preparing and distributing materials; maintain databases and spreadsheets.

  • Ability to explain complex systems or situations to businesses, residents and/or haulers in understandable ways.

  • Provide back-up staffing for residential recycling program, other general office needs, mailroom and community garden support, as needed.

  • Develop safe work habits and follow all required safety policies and procedures.

  • Support and respect diversity in the workplace.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

The Ideal Candidate

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Three years of general office experience.

    • OR Associate's degree with two years of office experience.

    • OR Bachelor's degree with one year of office experience.

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to residents and other local partners.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet the city's driving standards.

  • Ability to pass reference and background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, communications or outreach related field.

  • Experience in a recycling/sustainability field and/or public outreach and education.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience conducting outreach to businesses.

  • Skilled at promoting programs that involve behavior change and 'making the sale'.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse customers, employees, contractors, other agencies, public officials and the general public.

  • A self-starter with excellent time-management skills.

  • Experience with software in the Microsoft Office Suite and Salesforce, or similar data management software.

 

Compensation

Salary Range: $19.20-$25.72 per hour

Starting salary will be determined depending on relevant work experience. The city pays the full retirement contribution to PERS; provides employees with an opportunity to participate in a deferred compensation retirement plan; and offers excellent health, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. The city also has available a tuition reimbursement program and a public service loan forgiveness program. In addition to hourly wage, 4% bilingual pay may be available.
