Field Instructor - Outdoor School

The Northwest Outdoor Science School is seeking individuals to staff our Fall 2015 Outdoor School program. Outdoor School is a residential science education program for Oregon fifth & sixth grade students.

Field Instructors assume responsibility for the planning and implementation of field- based environmental education programs at residential Outdoor Science School sites.

SUPERVISED BY: Site Supervisor


  • Train counselors (high school & college volunteers) to teach field study content.

  • Mentor counselors and staff assistants while they teach elementary students.

  • Provide direct instruction to elementary students.

  • Develop lesson plans and outlines of duties for counselors and teachers.

  • Prepare teaching and student guides and other necessary instructional materials.

  • Motivate students to be informed, concerned and in­volved in their environment.

  • Meet w/ teachers daily to plan instructional activities to meet the needs of students.

  • Work with other Field Instructors and Site Supervisor to integrate all field studies.

  • Evaluate program quality to offer the best possible learning opportunities.

  • Be constantly aware of student and staff health and safety while on field study.

  • Be responsible for assigned supplies and materials.

  • Strive to minimize physical impacts on field study areas.

  • Assist program staff by leading social and recreational activities for students.

  • Assist with emergency situations as needed.


  • College graduate or equivalent amount of directly related experience.

  • Ability and desire to work with children.

  • Prior work and/or volunteer experience in a teaching capacity is preferred.

  • Training, knowledge, and previous work experience with relevant subject matter.

  • Ability to establish and maintain healthy relationships in a residential environment.


$420.00 - $504.60 per week. Fall 2015 schedule is a mix of five day (Mon-Fri) and six day (Sun-Fri) work weeks. Room & board are provided.


You must enjoy working outdoors and teaching to be successful in this position. Positions require employees to live on-site during the week. Individuals are assigned to one site for the entire season and typically carpool to & from camp. Owning a vehicle is not a requirement. With the exception of our Magruder site (Rockaway Beach) we cannot provide weekend housing. We cannot accommodate pets at any of our four sites.
